As the new year dawns, I feel like a lookout on a ship that’s sailing into difficult waters. I’m aware of challenges ahead due to some family medical situations and to the state of the nation and the world. The introduction to Reinhold Niebuhr’s Serenity Prayer is helpful:
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.
Each new year is a fresh start, a time to look within, to give thanks, to take a “fearless moral inventory.” My goal for 2022 is to be more loving and more inclusive. That’s it. Keep it basic. Keep it simple.
This is consistent with my hope for the nation and the world, that we would be a more loving and more inclusive people and planet.

Now that’s a New Year’s resolution that sounds good to me.
